Baishakhi

Baishakhi, is a festival of North India and a very prominent one for Punjab. This festival is celebrated with gusto and gaiety by the hard working farmers of Punjab after harvest. Baisakhi denotes the Punjabi New Year and the beginning of the harvest season. It always falls 14th April and marks the beginning of the solar year.

Celebrations
Dressed in the festive attire, people go to temples and gurdwaras with flowers, mithai and money before dawn. They give 'thanks' for their fortune and pray for a better crop in the next year. Sometimes a few days old baby is taken to the temple and the first drink of water is given to it with a rose petal.

Tradition
On the day of Baisakhi the ‘Khalsa’ (The Pure Ones) took birth and Sikhs were given a code of conduct to maintain. The incident was guided by the

last living Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. All over the world at this time, Sikhs exhibits the ethics taught by their Gurus and enjoy the birth of the Khalsa.
History reveals that about twenty thousand Sikhs were martyred in a day which is identified as "Ghallughara" (Bloody Carnage). After this, Ahmed Shah Abdali considered that he had crushed the complete Sikh population, but was deeply disheartened after hearing

that the huge numbers of Sikhs are enjoying Baisakhi at Amritsar. From this very day according to the custom all Sikhs gather at Amritsar and settle their troubles of politics or religion. This tradition continues still now. This day also have a special connotation to the Hindus as Swami Dayanand Saraswati established the ‘Arya Samaj’on this very day of 1875. This day is once again of great spiritual importance to the Buddhists as Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment and Nirvana on this day.
