GRAPE
Grapes are one of the oldest cultivated plants. They are classified as true berries because the fruit wall or pericarp is fleshy all the way through. Grape plant is a decidious climber growing to 12 meters. It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. Grapes are the fruits that grow on

a woody grape vine. The grapevine belongs to the family Vitaceae. Grapes grow in clusters and can be black, blue, golden, green, purple-red and white. They can be eaten raw or used for making grape juice, luscious jams, jellies, wines, raisins, vinegars and grape seed oil. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. Grape plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade or in direct sunlight. It prefers a deep rich moist well-drained moderately fertile loam. These plants grow best in a calcareous soil. Partial shade though a warm sunny position is required for the fruit to ripen. Some of the more tender varieties may require winter protection. Vines can be untied and laid flat on the ground and covered with soil or straw. The plant should be set into the ground at a sharp angle, almost lying with the crown of the plant (where the top cane meets the roots) at ground level, and the stem above the ground. The grape plant will take about a year to become strong. For optimum growth and production they need a sunny location with good air circulation, and well-drained, slightly acidic soil of moderate fertility.

Grapes helps to lower cholesterol levels in the body and thus slows the build up of deposits in the artery, it also helps in fighting cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease and other ailments. Grape seed extract may help slow aging, lessen allergy symptoms, and eye strain, and fight certain skin diseases.

COCONUT

The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the Family Arecaceae (palm family). It is the only species in the genus Cocos, and is a large palm, growing to 30 m tall. The coconut palm has a crown of pinnately compound yellow-green feathery leaves called fronds. Each frond reaches 15 to 17 feet in length. The leaves are yellow greenish in colour. Two major classes of coconuts are typically recognized on the basis of their stature. The ones most

commonly planted for commercial purposes are the tall varieties. The dwarf varieties may have originated as a mutation of tall types. The dwarf variety grows to a height of twenty-five to thirty feet and begin to flower after three years, being only about three feet tall. The coconut palm tree grows in hot areas. It grows in frost free areas and in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific region. The tree grows near coastal areas. The coconut grows in rainforests and other tropical of climates too.

The coconut fruit has a hard shell outside and white kernel inside with a hollow center containing coconut water. After the flowers bloom they develop into coconuts. It may take a year or so for the coconut tree to mature. The coconut fruit form at the base of the palm fronds. One tree can produce up to 50 coconuts. Each coconut takes 5 to 6 months to germinate. The coco palm is one of the most useful trees in existence, each part of it having some value. Barracks, mats, baskets, and hats are all made out of the leaves, midrib, and coir. In addition to its nutritious value, coconuts also have some medicinal properties. The juice of green coconuts (immature fruits) is recommended for heart, liver and kidney disorders, as well as gonorrhea. Large quantities of coconuts are exported for use chiefly in the making of cakes, desserts, and confectionery.
