  HISTORY OF DIWALI
TARAPITH

The name Kali first appears in the Rig Veda, not as that of a goddess, but as that of the black tongue of the seven flickering tongues of Agni, the Hindu god of fire. However, the prototype of the figure now known as Kali does appear, in the form of a goddess named Raatri. In the Sangam era of Tamilakam, a Kali-like bloodthirsty goddess named Kottravai appears in the literature of the period. It was the composition of the Puranas in late antiquity that firmly gave Kali a place in the Hindu pantheon. Kali or Kalika is described in the Devi-Mahatmyam from the Markandeya Purana,

where she is said to have emanated from the goddess Durga, during one of the battles between the divine and anti-divine forces. It is said that Maharaja Krishnan Chandra of Nawadweep gave an order that everyone, in his domain should worship Kali. Thus more than 10,000 images of Kali began to be worshipped in his domain. It is believed that Lord Chaitanya’s contemporary Krishnananda Agambagish, due to a dream sees the present form of the image of Kali, that he should make her image after the figure, he saw first in the morning.Diwali is also known as festival of lights. On this day, Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Treta Yug,

returned to his capital Ayodhaya after the exile of fourteen years thrust upon him by his step mother Kaikeyee in jeolousy, because Ram would become the king and not her own son Bharat. Thousands of years have passed, and yet so ideal is the kingdom of Rama that it is remembered to this day. The evildoer Ravana has been eliminated by Lord Rama, his brother Laksmana and with their army of monkeys. Sita has been returned to her husband, now they make their way to Ayodhya in triumph and glory. But Kaikeyee, meanwhile, has done enough penance for the misery comes to the family and the kindom. Bharat is refused to ascend on the throne, and has kept vigil as a regent, and told Rama that if he didn’t return on the last day of fourteen years exile, he would immolate himself. Consequently, to commemorate the return of Rama, Sita and Laksmana to Ayodhya people celebrate Diwali with the bursting of crackers and by lighting up their houses with earthen diyas or other lamps in the grandest style, year after year.
