Playing with colours has its legend in the Radha and Krishna tales. It was Lord krishna who was envious of his soul mate's fair complexion, he being dark. He complained to his mother Yashoda about this discrimination. To mollify the child, his loving mother gave permission to Krishna to apply colours on Radha's face and transform her facial appearance according to his preference.
 

Playful Krishna treasured the thought and executed it. Thus playing with colours gained popularity and in time turned out to be a ritual and later a part of the celebration.

  
 

Spirit of Festivity

 
  Festivals often mark the onset of new seasons. Holi celebrated in the month of March welcomes the Spring season. With the newness in the atmosphere people clean their homes and set out to put the past behind to start afresh. Colours that are important for the celebration have the spirit of festivity that helps us to put down our inhibitions and take steps ahead for a new friendship, a new beginning full of mirth and joy.  
  Burning of Holika and playing with 'abeer' cleans the atmosphere, disinfects the air of any air borne diseases. People adorn new clothes and greet each other for a new beginning. Sweets are offered and there remains an atmosphere of festivity and joy through out the day.
