Dwarka

People of Dwarka celebrates Janmashtami with great fervour. Located in the state of Gujarat, the city of Dwarka is believed to be established by Lord Krishna and his brother Balram. Interestingly, in Dwarka Janmashtami is celebrated in the month of Shravana and the Aboti Brahmin there performs the rites of Janmashtami every day on a regular basis. They call it their ‘Nitya Karm’ of the Lord. On the morning of Janmashtami, a ‘mangal aarti’ is performed in every temples of the city. Thereafter the idol of Krishna is cleaned and decorated and only then are the devotees able to pay a visit. Food items prepared from milk are offered to the Lord Krishna along with a special ‘Banta Bog’, The Dwarkadeesh temple is widely famous for its elegant Janmashtami celebration and thus attracts a huge number of devotees all over the country.
Mathura

Mathura being the birth place of Lord Krishna, Janmashtami is a festival of special significance, to the people of the city. The event is celebrated at its most wonderful in this place.

The main focus of Janmashtami celebration in Mathura is the ‘Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir’, a temple which is believed to have been built on the exact location where Lord Krishna was born. The main attraction of the temple is the place where Devaki gave birth to Krishna, known as ‘Garbha Ghriha’, where presently a statue of the Lord is kept. The devotees observe strict fast till midnight, and breaks it only after the hour when the Lord is believed to have taken birth. The devotees sing songs and hymns in the praise of the Lord and special tableaus are presented to honour the divine.
During Janmashtami, Mathura becomes a tourist spot with millions of devotees from all over the world coming to witness the celebration of the place known as the Krishna’s birth place.

Delhi

Janmashtami in Delhi is celebrated with great zest and zeal. People here gets up early in the morning, takes bath and visits their nearest temple. There they decorate the temple, they adorn the idol of Krishna and offers special prayers.They offer ‘bhog’ to the lord and offer prayers. Even the devotees decorates their individual houses with colourful decorative items. Small idols of infant Krishna are purchased and put in the cradles. They then keeps rocking the cradle for the entire day. Conches are blown during midnight to mark the birth of the Lord.
 
 
Maharashtra

In Mumbai and Pune, Janmashtami is popularly known as ‘Dahi Handi’, and is celebrated with great excitement. The ‘Dahi Handi’ is a special event observed to mark the mischevious and fearless character of child Krishna. The Handi is a clay pot filled with buttermilk and is tied at a convenient height above the ground. Now groups of people known as Govinda Pathaks builds a human pyramid and tries to break the handi, by reaching the height. This depicts their achievement through unity.
Moreover hefty rewards are given to the Govinda Pathaks for brteaking the handi, thus various groups of Govinda Pathaks competes with each other for the prize. This has turned into a game and attracts a large group of viewers.

Manipur

In Manipur Janmashtami is known as Krishna Janma. It is celebrated like any other region at two places in Imphal. The first being Govindaji temple and the other is the International Society for Krishna Consciousness temple.
