The brand is Bond, James Bond. And like Levi’s going red-loop or Pepsi turning blue, this franchise too gets a sudden modern facelift in the latest Bond film, Casino Royale. The only James Bond story for which Albert Broccoli never attains the rights is Casino Royale. Instead of making Casino Royale a "straight" movie, he decides to try a parody. The opening is brilliant. We are bringing in to the "real" Sir James Bond (David Niven), a retired "pure spy" who is shocked by the disgraceful behavior of the agent presently assigned his name and number. M (John Huston) appeals for Bond's come back to energetic responsibility. Spies

all over the planet are being killed, and the governments of the Soviet Union, France, the United States, and England have provisionally set aside their differences to battle SMERSH, the illegal association supposed of the murders. At first, Bond rejects, but, after M is killed, he alters his mind and is in agreement to come back.

Casino Royale is intelligent, amusing, and challenging in its satire. The convention so accepted in the executive Bond movies -- the gadgets, the women, and the cars -- are skewered with delight in. Bond is a held in reserve twit with a stammer that looks and acts nothing like the stylish Connery account, and his disdain for the "tricks of the trade" is simple.

By distant the most excellent ingredient of Casino Royale is Burt Bacharach's score. Light and upbeat, it's the perfect melodic cohort for a spy spoof. Neither John Barry nor the "James Bond Theme" is neglected.

In spite of an exciting cast that comprises such notables as Niven, Sellers, Allen, Orson Welles, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jacqueline Bisset, Casino Royale is too ludicrous and messed up to be of more than transitory attention to real Bond enthusiasts. A small number of good aspects of this farce are infinitely outweighed by the bad. Besides, given how close some of the Bond movies have move toward to self-parody, it's dubious whether an absolute satire is defensible.
