Next Page

'Annaprashan' is a social ritual among the Hindus, an occasion when the baby breaks its baby food pattern to welcome home-made food. It is as well as a social introduction of the new member of the family in the community. Annaprashan literally means feeding the baby rice for the first time. "Anna" means food, specially rice while "prashan" means to feed.

Annaprashan gathers the importance of a religious ceremony. Arranged for the Hindu child generally before teething, this ritual is separate for both boys and girls. In case of the girl child annaprashan is performed on odd months, generally on 5th or the 7th month. Whereas in case of a boy child the ritual is performed on even months either on 6th or the 8th month. Annaprashan is not an elaborate affair for the girl child .The offering of water to the forefathers, worship of Lord Vishnu and feeding the baby the prasad (offerings made to the gods)are the few rituals

followed.
For the boy child, rituals are different and elaborate. After the initial worship of Shasti, "Markendeo" puja is performed for the child's wealth and happiness. Thereafter Lord Ganesh and sixteen other deities are worshipped. It is commonly called "Shoras Matrika". In addition Basundhara puja is also performed for the wellbeing of the house.

'Adhibus kriya' is anotherritual performed during annaprashan. A "Homn" (sacred fire)is performed thereby informing Lord Brahma the date, time and position of the stars of the child. This is commonly called "aahuti".
