' Naamkaran: Christening or naming the child is followed according to the rules in panjika. Names have a special significance not just in their meanings but also astronomically. According to zodiac signs under which the baby is born, the first alphabet of the babies'names correspond with each other and changes every year according to the planetary position. This is an important part in 'Naamkaran' during 'Annaprashan'.According to

panjika,the parents of the child initially fix at least 5 names and write these on 5 different chits. These paper chits are placed under the lamps, and the priest concentrates on them. Gradually the lamplights burn out until two lamps remain lighted.

The paper chits below these two lamps are taken out and both the names are finalized. One is "Devnam"and the other is a common name given to the child. The former name is generally used during religious rituals in future. After Naamkaran ‘Homn’ is performed using rice powder. The child is then fed a small portion of the prasad.The child’s maternal uncle plays

an important part in the ritual. He feeds the baby and also helps the child to choose the articles placed in front of him/her in a platter, each of which symbolise future vocation. Choosing of a particular article generally is said to indicate the child's future vocation. Parents pray for a long and happy life for their baby.
