Ma Kali devotee Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa
Ramakrishna Paramahansa was born as Gadadhar Chattopadhyay in the year 1836. Ramakrishna was one of the greatest religious leaders ever born in India. He played a significant role in Ma Kali devotee Sri Ramkrishna Paramhangsa
the Bengal Renaissance of the 19th century. He believed that every individual must have only one aim in life i.e., the realization of the Ultimate Reality, and to achieve this aim, one needs the purity of mind.

Ramkrishna was deeply devoted towards Mother Goddess Kali from a very young age. His eldest brother Ram Kumar Chattopadhyay was appointed by Rani Rashmoni as the priest of the Kali temple in Dakshineshwar. Gadhadar often paid a visit to his brother there but he stayed at Jhamapukur in Central Kolkata. But after some days he began to live with his brother at the temple.

Meanwhile, Ram Kumar was becoming physically weak and appealed to Mathur babu (the youngest son-in-law of the Rani) to involve Gadadhar in temple work. Subsequently Gadadhar was employed as the dresser of the deity. Ram Kumar died of typhoid in 1856. This led to Ramkrishna being appointed as the permanent chief priest of the temple. The devotion with which he performed the puja instantly became a sight to behold and this in turn attracted many to be present there while he performed his puja.

Ramakrishna married Saradamani of Jairambati at the age of 23. His wife became his first disciple. A wandering monk, known as Totapuri, initiated
Ramakrishna in the Advaita Vedanta.
Kali temple in Dakshineshwar
It is believed that after being initiated Rama Krishna remained in a state of absolute meditation, for a period of approximately six months.
He became restless and could not eat or sleep. Through out the day he meditated to Mother (Kali) and cried: “Mother, show yourself to me.” This continued for years and he was on the verge on becoming insane in devotion of Maa Kali.

Being utterly frustrated, one day he decided to end his life with the aid of a sword which was hanging on the wall near him. At this juncture Mother appeared before him and he fell unconscious.
After this he mostly used to remain in a semi-conscious state. He started manifesting Mother and started to interact with Her.
He even worshipped Saradamani in the same way he worshipped the mother goddess which was known as Shorshi puja.
Kali Idol in Dakshineshwar He preached universal brotherhood and was soon recognized as a great Guru by most. Stalwarts like Girish Ghosh, Shivnath Shastri, Keshab Sen etc became his disciples. But his most famous disciple was Narendranath Dutta, who is better known as Swami Vivekananda. He taught Naren the truth of life by letting him see a glimpse of the Holy Spirit. It was Vivekananda in later days, who held high the teachings of Sri Ramakishna to the world by forming the Belur Math. On January 1st, 1886, Ramkrishna ,seriously ill, touched some of his disciples. They were for a moment transformed into the state of Samadhi. His disciples remembered this incident as the Thakur taking the form of a Kalpataru.

Ramkrishna breathed his last on 16 August, 1886.He died of throat cancer. After the passing away of Ramakrishna, Saradamani became a religious leader in her own right.
