The inheritance track of West Bengal leads to the region of Hooghly, 47 km north of Kolkata. This historical region is plentiful in remnants of overseas settlers. The Portuguese established here in 1537, but were in retreat out by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor, in 1632. The British East India Company also recognized a factory here
in 1651. In those days the Hooghly River was the major

means for transport and Hooghly served as an outstanding trade port. Within an only some decades the town of Hooghly turned into a chief profitable center and the major port in Bengal. It is a district with both cultivation and manufacturing activities at their heights.

Places of Interest
There are a lot of places of chronological attention in the region. The main appeal is the great mosque - the Hooghly Imambara which was built in the 19th century. Bandel Charch, Debanandapur, the birthplace of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Joyrambati and Kamarpukur with its association to the life of Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi are the places of magnetism in the region.

Bandel
The remnants of the Portuguese arrangement at Bandel are the Church and the Monastery. It was built approximately 1660 by the Portuguese. Bandel Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in West Bengal. The Church is devoted to Nossa Senhora di Rozario. A significant railway junction of the Eastern Railway,

Bandel is 43 km from Calcutta and pulls towards tourists throughout the year. The simply relies of the Portuguese arrangement are the Church (Basilica) and the monastery. There is the figurine of" One lady of Happy Voyage" in the heart of the church. The church has three altars, a small organ & several tomb stones.

Antpur
At Antpur, only 62 km away from Calcutta, there is a profusion of temples built mostly by Krishnaram Mitra, a local zemindar during the eighteenth century. The most prominent of these is the one built in 1786 and dedicated to the family deity Radha-Govinda. It is a large ‘atchala’ structure with an attached ‘charchala mandap’ in front

known as the ‘Jagamohan’, bothl placed on a high platform approached by stairs. The ‘Chandimandap’ is another object of interest at Antpur in that the structure is one of the very few of its kind extant in West Bengal depicting fine artistry in wood.

Bansberia
Bansberia is about 15 kms north of the Hooghly. The temple compound here has two temples. It was one of the major villages of antique Saptagram. The temples of Ananta Vasudeva and Hanseswari are famous here. The Vasudeva temple is build in the conventional ekaratna fashion with curled cornices and an octagonal tower.
